Zack Kotzer is a writer, editor and former carny based out of Toronto. He became editor of Broken Pencil in 2022. His work has been published in The Globe and Mail, NOW Magazine, The Atlantic, Vice, Polygon and Spacing. He launched FUNLAND, a queer reimagination of 90s game magazines, in 2021. He has also written a book about pinball, knows too much about pinball, has a large chunk of his brain devoted to pinball. Olea Kim is a nonbinary zinester, artist, designer, with a knack for comics and we’re stoked to have them on board! You may recognize Olea from their sharp comics and co-organizing the Bug Milk reading and performance series, which collaborated with Canzine just last year. Olea will be helping us revolutionize our digital presence as well as lending their creative vision towards the printed magazine.

Yasmine is an undergraduate student double majoring in Cinema Studies and Sociology at the University of Toronto. She is a graphic designer for Free Friday Films held at Innis College, a writer for Broken Pencil and The Gargoyle, and a volunteer all over the Toronto art world — from the Toronto Zine Library to Shifting Ground Collective.

Tara Flint is the Co-Publisher, Event Director, Business and Circulation Manager at Broken Pencil. Tara introduced the spreadsheet to BP in 1999 and brings a broad background in marketing, event planning, finance, and management. Tara is responsible for advertising, circulation, accounting, event management, and fundraising.

Growing up in the burbs of Mississauga, Broken Pencil was the cultural and creative gateway drug, introduced to me by the cool, older art kids in high school. This experience set me on a path of eclectic imagination and talent, fueling my development as a writer and artist. Fast forward over 15 years, and I find myself working with Broken Pencil on the Canzine website, a full-circle moment that unites my career with the magazine that helped ignite my inspiration.

Hal Niedzviecki is a writer, speaker, culture commentator and editor whose work challenges preconceptions and confronts readers with the offenses of everyday life. He is the author of over ten books including the novel The Lost Expert (Cormorant Books, 2022), a collection of short stories Look Down, This is Where it Must Have Happened (City Lights, April 2011) and the nonfiction book Trees on Mars: Our Obsession with the Future (Seven Stories Press).
